Pool excavation in CT: a short season makes scheduling everything
Connecticut's outdoor pool season runs roughly Memorial Day through Labor Day — three months of usable weather in a year. That compressed window means good pool excavators book solid by March and stay booked through July. Homeowners who call in April hoping for a Memorial Day pool often end up opening next season. We recommend calling between November and February for spring installs, with early summer digs opening for next season's build.
Fiberglass pool installs have a tighter tolerance on dig dimensions than vinyl or gunite — the shell arrives on a flatbed with a scheduled crane, and the hole has to match the shell's exact footprint with proper base compaction underneath. We coordinate with the pool builder before the dig to confirm dimensions, depth at each point of the shell, and plumbing cutouts. A mis-dug hole costs a day of crane time; we've never missed one.
Access is the unspoken factor in pool excavation pricing. A backyard with an 8-foot gate opening, clear run to the pool site, and no overhead obstructions digs fast with a full-size excavator. A tight backyard with a 6-foot gate, mature trees overhead, and a stone retaining wall to work around digs slower with a mini-excavator and costs 30-50% more in equipment time. We quote after walking the site, and we're honest about which jobs are straightforward and which are grinds.
