Basement excavation is the first real test of any home build, and in Eastern Connecticut it comes with two wild cards: ledge and water. Roberts Excavation has been digging basements around Plainfield and the surrounding Windham and New London county towns since 2010, with owner DJ Roberts running the machine on every job. We dig new-construction basements, walkout basements on sloped lots, and basement additions under existing homes, holding the depths and elevations your foundation plan calls for.
Bedrock in this part of the state can sit inches below the topsoil on one lot and forty feet down on the neighbor's. When ledge is suspected, we dig a test pit before quoting so the number you get reflects what's actually in the ground. Minor rock gets handled with a hydraulic hammer; heavy ledge may mean coordinating a licensed blaster. We also plan for groundwater from day one, with dewatering during the dig and footing drain prep before backfill.
Every basement dig is coordinated with your foundation contractor and, on walkouts and underpins, your structural engineer. We shoot grades, cut to footing elevation, and leave a clean, square hole ready for forms. Most straightforward digs run two to four days, with sloped-lot walkouts adding a day or two. Estimates are free, and Connecticut's Call Before You Dig (811) utility marking is handled before any bucket goes in the ground.
