The leach field does the real work of a septic system: the tank just settles solids, while the field is where effluent actually gets treated and returned to the soil. Roberts Excavation builds new and replacement leach fields across Eastern Connecticut — Plainfield, the surrounding Windham County towns, and into New London County. It is precision grading work as much as digging, and after 500-plus projects completed since 2010, it is a job we know from every angle.
Field design follows the soil. A fast-draining sandy lot supports a compact conventional field; slower soils, rocky till, or high seasonal groundwater mean more lateral length, a shallower field, or a raised mound built with imported fill. We construct whatever the approved design calls for — stone-and-pipe trenches, chamber systems, or pressure-dosed beds — and set every lateral to grade so effluent distributes evenly instead of overloading one corner of the field.
Replacement fields are a big part of this work in Eastern Connecticut, where many original fields date to the 1970s and 80s. If your tank is sound but the field is saturated, replacing the field alone can put the system right without a full rebuild. We handle the health district permitting for replacement fields the same way we do for new construction, and estimates are always free.
