A concrete pour is only as good as what is underneath it, and that is the part of the job we own. Roberts Excavation preps sites for slabs, garage and barn floors, patios, sidewalks, and foundations throughout Eastern Connecticut — excavation, base, and fine grade — working with the concrete contractors that homeowners and builders in the Plainfield area bring to the pour. It is a role we have filled on projects across the region since 2010.
The sequence matters. We excavate to subgrade and get rid of topsoil, organics, and soft pockets, because concrete placed over material that compresses will crack no matter how well it is finished. Then the gravel base goes in — placed in lifts and compacted each time, not dumped and bladed once — and we fine grade it to the pour elevation so the slab comes out at consistent thickness. Footings in Connecticut generally need to bear on undisturbed soil below the 42-inch frost depth, and we dig them to the plan and leave clean bottoms.
We do not pour concrete ourselves, and we do not pretend to. What we do is show up when we said we would, so the site is compacted, graded, and forms-ready before your concrete contractor mobilizes — no crew standing around waiting on dirt work. If you need a referral, we coordinate with concrete contractors we trust across Windham and New London counties. Estimates are free.
