Pasture Renovation

Eastern Connecticut pasture takes a beating — wet springs, compacted travel lanes, ruts from winter feeding, and low spots where water sits into June. Roberts Excavation renovates pastures for farms in Plainfield and across Windham and New London counties, handling the earthwork side of bringing a field back: regrading, drainage, filling ruts and holes, and smoothing the humps and hollows that make a field rough to mow and risky to ride.

Standing water is usually the root problem. Grass drowns in the low spots, mud takes over, and weeds move into the bare ground. We regrade so water sheds instead of pooling, cut French drains where the site calls for them, and rebuild the grade in areas that have eroded or compacted under years of hoof traffic. Once the ground actually drains, reseeding and rotation management have a real chance to work.

Every farm is different, so we look at the whole picture — where the water comes from, where it needs to go, and how you rotate your horses. Some renovations are a one-day regrade; others get staged over weeks so you never lose all your turnout at once. We have been doing this work since 2010, we run our own equipment, and estimates are always free.
